In the opening article, the author discusses the use of Geographic Profiling for Crime Analysis to help in the investigation of serial crimes. Crime analysis is both a profession and a set of techniques. The professionals who perform crime analysis, and the techniques they use, are dedicated to helping a police department become more effective through better information. Crime mapping is used by analysts in law enforcement agencies to map, visualize, and analyze crime incident patterns.

    Tactical Analysis includes descriptive statistics and summary information, such as weekly crime/arrest counts, year-to-year crime comparisons and suspect bulletins. Police departments can collect data from the public through reports, as well as surveys on topics such as community problems, victimization and satisfaction with policing efforts.   Crime analysis is an emerging profession in policing and a growing topic of interest in the criminal justice field.
