The first part of this study will be concerned with showing some reasons for holding that the Hebrew sacrificial system rightly claimed the authority of God, and that the Old Testament gives a convincing account of its history. It is no new discovery that the Israelites were not alone in offering sacrifices.   The sacrifices in the Old Testament pointed forward to the perfect and final sacrifice of Christ. As with the rest of the Law, the sacrifices were “a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ” (Colossians ).

These New Testament words referring to the nature of the Old Testament establish the typical character of the Old Testament. In addition to this is the weight of the entire book of Hebrews, for it is almost completely devoted to a study of the typical character of the Old Testament. Display the following pictures: Jesus Praying in Gethsemane (Gospel Art Book, no. 56; see also ) and The Crucifixion (Gospel Art Book, no. 57; see also ). Explain that the sacrifices outlined in Leviticus also teach about the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Leviticus 1 provides instructions for performing an animal sacrifice called a burnt offering.
